Councillor want Bristol Airport to pay policing cost
22.12.07
Bristol Airport should pay the cost of its policing, Weston town councillor Mark Canniford said last s week. He made the comments at a meeting of the town council on December 11, where he raised the issue after discovering the numbers of police officers employed to cover the site.
There is currently an inspector, a sergeant, 10 constables, 4 police community support officers and 3 special constables based at the airport. Councillor Canniford said: 'Bristol Airport has its own policing team, yet they do not make any contributions towards paying for it.'
'Members of the public pay through their council tax. I think it should be added to ticket prices so that only those using the airport are charged for the police force, as only a minority of taxpayers probably use it.'
However, the airport's police inspector, David Stokes, said that: 'Funding for the police team comes from 3 sources, and 2 of these are from central government. These pay for a substantial amount of the costs for the team.'
