Expansion plans delayed for more environmental research
21.10.07
The submission of plans to expand of Bristol Airport have been delayed to allow more research into the airport's effect on the environment, the BBC reports. Airport bosses were to submit a planning application to North Somerset County Council this autumn, but now hope this will happen by the middle of 2008.
Anti-airport expansion campaigners welcomed the move, saying that it showed the success of their operations. However, the airport said that, even with the 6 - 9 month delay in submitting the application, they hope the expansion would still happen within three years.
Paul Kehoe, the new managing director of the airport, said: 'We always said we could balance the economic, social and environment issues around expansion. Now have to try and work out the impact of the airport.'
It is expected that the airport will handle nearly 7 million passengers next year. An extension to the terminal and very profitable airport car parking is planned.
