OFT scambusters campaign at UK airports
08.10.07
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is taking its bogus holiday club campaign to UK airports next week. Representatives will take roadshows to Glasgow, Manchester, Luton and Bristol Airport on October 12 and 19.
The OFT is launching a campaign to crack down on bogus holiday clubs that cost 400,000 UK citizens more than £1 billion every year. The airport campaign is being run in October as this is a peak time for holiday club scams.
Members of the OFT Scambusters team and local trading standards officers will be targeting tourists about to fly to resorts including Tenerife and the Costa del Sol, where holiday scams operate. Spanish authorities are also involved in the campaign in Spain.
The teams will be at Glasgow and Bristol Airport on October 12 between 06:00 and 15:00 and at Manchester and Luton Airport on October 19 between 06:00 and 15:00.
The OFT will offer advice and also hand out fake scratchcards similar to those used by scammers to British tourists, but which are scratched off to reveal information and advice regarding the scam.
