Greens oppose expansion plans
31.03.09
Expansion plans for Bristol Airport are being opposed by Green Party councillors. A motion to Bristol City Council disputing claims the expansion is good for the local economy has been submitted by councillor Charlie Bolton. He has called for the airport to focus on becoming economically and environmentally sustainable instead of expanding.
The airport claims that up to 4000 new jobs could be created and more than £340m injected in to the local economy if its expansion plans get the go ahead. The proposals include extending the terminal building, a new airport hotel, extra car parking and new aircraft stands.
Councillor Bolton's motion will be debated by the full council on Tuesday and could be amended before being agreed. The resulting motion will be passed to North Somerset Council's planning department, who will consider it as part of the planning process. A decision on the expansion plans is due to be made by planning authority North Somerset Council by the end of May.
