Councillor urges airport expansion backing
30.05.10
Following the approval of a £150m expansion of Bristol Airport, North Somerset Council's deputy leader has urged councillors to back the plans and take advantage of the financial contributions the airport has agreed to make to developments for supporting the application, the Mercury reports.
Elfan Ap Rees said: ‘Those objecting will kill the goose that lays the golden egg.’ He said the best way to see an improvement in traffic in villages is to support the plan and reap the benefits of conditions that would see the airport pay towards road improvements.
The expansion is subject to 69 planning conditions and a legal agreement by the airport and the council. The financial contributions include more than £4m towards the cost of a new link road between the A370 and A38, cash to improve existing and new bus services from Weston and £100,000 towards an environmental improvement fund.
The decision must be ratified by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government as part of the development (more airport parking) is within the green belt.
