Campaign group want airport plans called in
29.01.10
Campaigners fighting the expansion of Bristol Airport have asked for the decision on the plans to be referred to the Secretary of State. Stop Bristol Airport Expansion (SBAE) said their request for a ‘call-in’, which would result in a direct decision from Government or a public inquiry, was made because they believe the effects of the decision, such as the impact of increased traffic, noise and emissions, stretch beyond North Somerset Council’s area of control.
SBAE say that although they accept Bristol Airport serves the area’s needs for business and leisure, they strongly believe the incremental benefits associated with its planned expansion would be far outweighed by the detrimental impacts on local communities, the environment and the local economy. Local MPs Stephen Williams and Don Foster both support the request for a call-in.
