Council approves expansion plans
25.05.10
Plans to expand Bristol Airport were passed by North Somerset councillors last night. The £150 million scheme was approved by ten votes to two. Council planners had recommended the plans for approval, subject to more than sixty conditions including a restriction on night flights and a contribution of over £5.5m for local transport improvements.
The airport said 4000 new jobs could be created and £340m injected into the local economy if plans were allowed to go-ahead. However, campaigners argued that a 60 percent increase in passengers was too high. Over 5500 comments were submitted during a consultation on the plans, of with 5180 were objections.
The plans include extending the terminal, more airport parking and new aircraft stands. The approval will now be referred to the secretary of state for communities and local government because there is an element of development - the airport parking - on green belt land.
