easyJet flight lost radio contact

A easyJet plane flying to Bristol Airport lost all radio contact due to an electrical fault, an official accident report released today revealled. The pilots of the Airbus A319 feared being intercepted by military aircraft, and at one point the plane carrying 138 passengers and 6 crew flew closer to another aircraft than allowed, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said.
The captain decided to land the flight from Alicante as scheduled and it touched down safely on September 15, 2006. He believed if he changed their flight plan it ‘might be considered a hostile action’. At one point the plane's transponder signal was lost for about 10 minutes, during which time the aircraft was not visible to air traffic control radar. This led to the plane coming closer to another aircraft than is permitted. The AAIB described the incident as ‘serious’.
In a full report published today the AAIB made 10 safety recommendations to add to the four it made in an earlier report in December 2006.
