Expansion plans decision due today
24.05.10
Plans to expand Bristol Airport are to be decided by North Somerset councillors later today. Planning officers have recommended the £150m scheme for approval, but campaigners including a local MP have urged its rejection.
A 260-page planning report to be discussed has more than 60 conditions including a restriction on night flights and a contribution of over £5.5m for local transport improvements. Any approval will have to be referred to the secretary of state for communities and local government because there is an element of development (airport parking) in the green belt.
Local MP Dr Liam Fox has written to North Somerset Council stating he cannot support the expansion before the ‘increasingly unsatisfactory traffic problems are dealt with’.
