Expansion plans revealled

The first computer-generated images of the expansion plans at Bristol Airport have been released (see the airport website). The proposals, set to cost £70m, include more than doubling the size of the terminal to handle 10 million passengers a year by 2016. A full planning application is due to be submitted to North Somerset Council following public consultation. This is expected in the second quarter of next year.
Local community representatives were given a first glimpse of the images yesterday. The scheme includes glass fronted extensions to the east and west of the current terminal, other developments on the north side, and an improved passenger pick-up and drop-off zone. A new three-star hotel is also being planned along with a five-storey car park.
Alan Davies, Director of Planning at Bristol Airport, said: ‘We are committed to enhancing the airport's role as a regional gateway for international travel. Demand for air travel to and from the South West is forecast to grow. By increasing the choice of services we offer and enhancing the facilities we provide to passengers we can reduce reliance on airports outside the region.’
The airport had planned to start what is sure to be a lengthy planning process this autumn but say they have delayed the application so further public consultations can take place.
