Ryanair demand £220 from Spain passengers
23.04.08
Ryanair passengers flying from Bristol Airport to Spain were asked for an extra £220 to board a flight they had already paid for late last week, the Evening Post reports. A dozen passengers boarding a flight to Barcelona last Friday night were asked to pay the additional sum because they had failed to provide passport details required by the Spanish authorities in advance.
The airline said its normal policy when passengers fail to provide the APIS details - advanced passenger information - is to ask them to take a later flight and pay a £50 ‘missed departure’ fee. But the airline admitted its handling agents at Bristol Airport had made a mistake by demanding the passengers pay £220 for new tickets.
Six of the 12 passengers, who would have originally paid around £30 for their flights, paid for new fares while the remaining 6 chose to take a later flight, waiting 10 hours for the next flight to Barcelona.
Ryanair spokesman Peter Sherrard told the Evening Post: ‘We understand our handling agents at the airport misunderstood the instructions from Ryanair. Some people were wrongly asked to pay £220 for new tickets. We apologise. This was a mistake by the agents. It has not happened before and we will ensure it does not happen again.’
Servisair, which Bristol Airport says has the contract with Ryanair to act as handling agents, was not available for comment when contacted by the newspaper.
