Residents and campaigners slam airport plans
23.01.09
Local residents and campaigners have criticised plans to expand Bristol Airport, put on show at the hub for the next 6 weeks prior to a planning application, the Bristol Post reports. The £150m scheme includes a bigger terminal, new car parking and a hotel. It could also mean a further five or six planes taking off or landing every hour during peak times, and the airport claims it will create 4,000 jobs by 2017.
As a six-week public consultation began yesterday, there was heavy criticism of the plans from locals and campaigners against the expansion. Local residents told the newspaper they were dismayed to hear that an extra 4 million passengers a year could be travelling through the airport once the expansion is complete. And campaigners from the Stop Bristol Airport Expansion (SBAE) said claims that the scheme would contribute more than £340m to the area's economy had not been properly explained.
