Bristol Airport car parking amongst the UK's most expensive
22.02.10
Passengers parking at Bristol Airport for a weekend away have to pay some of the highest prices in the country. Those pre-booking a 3 day stay in its long-stay car park pay £33, second only to Luton Airport (£38) in a league table of the major airports. The period at Gatwick costs £18, £29 at Heathrow, £23 at Birmingham and £29 at Liverpool.
If travellers choose to pay on the day they travel, they pay even more than if they pre-book - an additional £11 - at Bristol Airport. This is the fifth highest of 13 major airports in England, according to travelsupermarket. For 15-day stays in the long-stay car park, Bristol compares more favourably at £112 on the day, the ninth highest. The re-booked cost of £65 is middle-of-the table, in seventh.
The main reason for the high cost of Bristol Airport parking appears to be the lack of alternatives. The local council has blocked any recent attempt by off airport car park operators to set up in competition to the official car parks, allowing the airport a virtual monopoly. For short stays passengers typically want the convenience of parking at the airport, and the lack of alternatives allows the airport to charge higher prices even compared even to much bigger rivals. For longer stays passengers look for alternatives - such as bus, taxi or friends and family - which drives down the cost of parking.
