Balloonists take advantage of airspace closure

19.04.10

Hot air balloonists made the most of the ban on flights over the weekend. It allowed them into normally prohibited airspace, with one group of balloons who took-off from Ashton Court estate near Bristol over the weekend even flying over Bristol Airport before landing near Blagdon Lake, the BBC reports.

Normally pilots would not be allowed to fly close to the airport and have to liaise with air traffic controllers if they want to climb higher than a certain level. Balloon pilot Clive Bailey told the news service he had never known a situation when the radio was so quiet. He said: ‘It was beautiful, the sky was so clear and there was just three balloons up there. Although it is bad news for travellers, it is really great for us!’
