Passengers down 12.7% in December; up 5.7% in 2008

Passengers at Bristol Airport dropped by 12.7% in December as the hub was badly hit by the economic slowdown. However, in the 12 months to the end of December passengers were up 5.7% to 6.17m.
International traffic fell by 10.6% to 233,000 in December, compared to the same month in 2007. Domestic traffic fell 14% to 80,000 due to easyJet winter capacity cuts. The number of passengers using charter airlines fell by 21.1% to 39,000, partly due to the collapse of XL Airways and partly First Choice / TUI operating only one aircraft instead of two.
Looking forward, on January 14 Ryanair announced that it would be increasing the number of
aircraft at Bristol from 2 to 4 with effect from July 2009. Ryanair expects the 12 new routes announced to increase its traffic at Bristol to almost 1.6m passengers per annum.
In the 12 months to the end of December international traffic grew by 18.5% to 3.82m. Domestic traffic fell 8.2% to 1.16m and the number of passengers using charter airlines fell by 12% to 1.19m.
