Passengers down 18% so far this year

The number of people using Bristol Airport has dropped by 18% since the start of 2009 compared to the same period last year, the Post reports. In the first 5 months of the year, 1,933,635 passengers passed through the airport – a drop of more than 442,000 compared to the 2.37 million during the same period in 2008. Passengers dropped 16.9% in May – the seventh month in a row passenger numbers have dropped.
Last month, the airport scaled back its expectations for passenger growth as it unveiled its £150m expansion plans. It previously said it expected passenger numbers would reach 10m a year by 2016, but now believes the figure will be reached by 2020, and has delayed its expansion plans accordingly.
Bristol Airport was rocked by the departure of German carrier Lufthansa, which stopped daily flights to Frankfurt on May 1. Previously held up as a model for the future of the airport, with links via Frankfurt to the rest of the world and a key business route, the airline blamed a lack of demand, which resulted in half full planes from November until the service was axed.
