Majority of consultation responses against expansion

More than half the responses to a consultation about the expansion of Bristol Airport were against the plans. Out of about 500 responses submitted on proposals to double the size of the terminal and increase the number of aircraft stands, 56% were against them. Those for the plans, which are due to be submitted to North Somerset Council this month, made up 38% of respondents and 6% said they did not have a clear view on the project.
The figures were revealed at a meeting of the airport consultative committee on April 29, when the consultation was discussed. As part of the process many issues were raised about how the airport's expansion could affect those living in the surrounding areas, including noise, increasingly congested roads and climate change issues. Plans to tackle these problems were outlined including a commitment to keeping noise at pre-2006 levels and reducing ground noise by positioning new buildings and noise walls to protect local communities.
The airport also revealed that a tracker has been installed to ensure aircraft do not exceed noise limits - if these are breached the flight operator will be fined. Another tracker has been installed to ensure aircraft stay on the correct flight path and is due to start working within 4 to 6 weeks. Financial penalties will also apply if aircraft veer from their intended route.
In an effort to alleviate the problem of increased traffic, the airport has set a target of getting 15% of passengers using public transport, improving bus services and contributing to road improvements, including the A38. The airport also said they will ensure emissions do not exceed 2007 levels and will transparently report emission figures in line with international standards.
