Airport could double in size

The terminal at Bristol Airport could double in size if new plans are approved. The airport is expected to submit a planning application in March for an extension to the terminal that could enable it to handle 10m passengers a year by 2016. The glass-fronted extension will be to the east and west of the current terminal, with further development on the north side of the site.
New car parking facilities will provide spaces for 3600 cars and plans include creating an overflow car park on land to the east of the A38. This land, which is under the flight path, would be used 13 weeks a year during the peak season and would remain grassed. It is also likely a separate planning application will be submitted for a new airport hotel, however its size and brand is yet to be announced.
The number of aircraft stands would also be increased by 9, taking the total to 33. Other proposals include extensions to the aircraft parking areas connected to the enlarged terminal building by walkways (a proposal previously rejected by local planners), eliminating the use of airside buses for the majority of flights. There will also be an improved passenger pick-up and drop-off zone, a new fuel storage facility and new office accommodation.
A consultation on the proposals is due to take place in January with an aim of submitting a planning application in March. Members of the campaign group Stop Bristol Airport Expansion believe the new developments would mean more misery for local residents with increased noise, cars and greenhouse gases.
A spokesman said: ‘At a time when we are all being asked to cut back on our carbon emissions, there can only be one conclusion from a consultation - Bristol Airport is already big enough.’
