Self scanning for e-passport holders
09.09.09
Passengers who have biometric or ‘e-passports’ can get through the control gates at Bristol Airport without being seen by a borders officer. The new passports have an electronic chip, which is scanned by a machine to confirm a passenger's identification in conjunction with a facial scan.
The facial recognition system is voluntary and can be used by any UK or European passenger over the age of 18 with an e-passport. No registration is required. The aim of the scheme is to improve security and efficiency, and the same technology is already being used at Manchester and Stansted airports.
