Giant mower - a new weapon against bird strikes
08.07.08
Bristol Airport has bought a giant lawn mower in order to cut the risk of bird strikes, the Western Mercury reports. The two-and-a-half tonne spearhead mower, which is pulled by a 6 tonne tractor, is being used to keep grass slightly longer near the runways as part of measures to help prevent birds being sucked into aircraft engines.
Managing the habitat at the airport is important because of the damage birds can cause to planes. Short grass can attract birds, so keeping it slightly longer using the new mower will help cut the risk of bird strikes. In addition, the mower will save time. At 6m wide, it can cut an area the size of a football pitch in just over seven seconds.
