Airport loses New York flights
07.04.10
Bristol Airport is to lose it New York connection. Continental Airlines will stop its daily transatlantic service from November 7, the airline confirmed yesterday, with the airport blaming significant increases in Air Passenger Duty (APD), combined with the current weakness of the pound, for putting 'disproportionate pressure on long-haul routes from regional airports'.
Since its introduction in May 2005 the airline has carried 400,000 passengers on its Bristol to New York route. No other carriers at any airport in the South West or Wales operate a direct scheduled flight to the US.
Aviation director at Bristol Airport, Shaun Browne, said: ‘We are disappointed with this news, having worked hard along with Continental to make this route a success over the last 5 years. We will be working hard to find ways to fill the gap left by Continental when it ceases operating the service.’
Passengers with a booking after November 7 will be contacted directly by Continental and offered alternative travel options or a refund.
