Planning decision delayed

The boss at Bristol Airport welcomed a decision by council planners last night to recommend its expansion plans to the main planning committee for approval, but refer it on to the council's main planning committee. Planning officers had recommended the £150 million scheme, which includes expanding the terminal plus a new multi-storey airport car park, be approved by North Somerset Council's South Area Committee. Members voted six-three in support of the scheme, but referred the ultimate decision to the council's main committee, which will cause a delay.
After listening to speakers for and against the plans at the special meeting last night, South Area Committee members referred the decision on to the Planning and Regulatory Committee. The plan was recommended subject to 67 conditions plus a legal agreement between the airport and the council. A meeting is anticipated to be held within six weeks.
Airport CEO Robert Sinclair, said: 'I am very pleased with the outcome - they've recommended the application to the Planning and Regulatory Committee. The South Area Committee represents the local people around the airport. They've decided according to facts without emotion, this really is very encouraging.'
However, Jeremy Birch from Friends of the Earth, which is against the growth of the airport, said the battle is still not over. He said: 'The decision is a minimum of another month away and that might be held up due to the General Election. The White Paper they are basing it on is likely to be thrown out anyway - the game remains all to play for.'
