Lufthansa axe Frankfurt route
02.04.09
Lufthansa has axed its route between Bristol Airport and Frankfurt due to a lack of demand from
business passengers. The route had been cut from 21 flights a week to 14 at the start of the winter schedule, and will now stop altogether on May 1.
The route was launched in March last year, and the cancellation comes just a week after airport bosses said the presence of Lufthansa demonstrated ‘the resilience of the business market in the South West’. However, Marianne Sammann, Lufthansa UK Manager, said: ‘Passenger figures for the 4 months from November to February have dropped around 12% compared with the previous 4 months and this downward trend is not expected to change in the near future. I would be very surprised if we will saw a change in demand for Bristol services in 2010.’
Airport aviation director Shaun Browne said: ‘This is obviously very disappointing news. The current economic conditions have influenced Lufthansa's decision, but we believe this route has great potential and will be working hard to see the service resume at the soonest opportunity.’
