Campaigners say airport expansion will hit businesses
01.11.08
A campaign group has said that a change in Government policy on emmissions will mean that any expansion of Bristol Airport will harm businesses. Stop Bristol Airport Expansion (SBAE) say this is because other industries will have to make bigger carbon cuts if airport growth is allowed.
Aviation emissions will be included in the UK's carbon emission reduction targets from November after MPs voted in favour of an amendment to the Climate Change Bill. UK emisions will have to be cut by 80% by 2050, but as Bristol Airport plans to expand - to take up to 10 million passengers by 2016 - other businesses will face tougher targets.
SBAE spokesperson Jeremy Birch said: ‘Inclusion of the UK's international aviation emissions in our new 80% target is fantastic news. The inclusion of emissions from flights in our carbon reduction targets creates a level playing field between industries.'
‘It now makes sense for all industries to play their part in delivering the cuts - and that means Bristol Airport must not be allowed expand. Otherwise it will be creating a further drain on the economy in addition to the millions of pounds it already loses the South West as local travellers spend more money abroad than tourists bring in.'
